Teams rewrite copy for three weeks when the real problem is that a third of the list is the wrong seniority. Checking the list first is unglamorous and usually right.
When reply rates fall the instinct is to change the message, because the message is the part you can see. But a list with the wrong seniority, stale signals or a quarter of its addresses unverified will defeat any copy, and rewriting is a slow way to find that out.
This is deliberately the cheap check to run first. It either clears the list, in which case the copy work is now well aimed, or it finds the real problem in an afternoon.
Lists rarely start wrong. They loosen. A size band gets widened to hit a volume target, a title filter gets an extra variant added, a geography grows a neighbouring market. Each change is defensible and the sum of them is a list the copy was not written for.
An inherited list, or one that sat unused for two quarters, is worth running through this before it goes anywhere near a sender. Job changes alone make a meaningful share of any B2B list undeliverable within a year.
Skills compound. These are the ones we usually install alongside it.
