THE SHORT VERSION

Subject lines are decided in thirty seconds at the end of an hour of writing, which is why the best newsletter of the month is frequently the least opened.

YOU GIVE ITA newsletter draft.
YOU GET BACKSubject options grouped by angle, preview text to match, and a recommended pairing to test against each other.

Angles rather than variations

Twelve subject lines that are all curiosity-gap phrasings of the same idea is one option written twelve ways. Grouping by angle forces genuinely different propositions onto the page, and the choice between a curiosity angle and a specificity angle is the choice that actually moves the open rate.

The preview line is half the impression

In most inboxes the preview text is as visible as the subject. Leaving it to auto-fill means it shows the first line of the email, which is usually a greeting. Writing it to extend the subject rather than repeat it is close to free and routinely skipped.

Testing something real

A recommended pairing puts two meaningfully different angles against each other, so the result teaches you about your audience rather than about two phrasings. Testing near-identical lines burns a send and produces a number nobody can act on.
